There is no free version
The demo was live through Steam Next Fest and has been taken down. A separate promotion gave Discord members the full game free for 24 hours on 1 August, and that has closed too. Nothing else exists.
Anywhere offering the game outside Steam is distributing an unauthorised copy — and for something made by two people at ten dollars, the maths of that is fairly plain. We do not link to those sites and we do not write about them.
The complaint you should read before buying
The Steam reviews sit in Very Positive territory, so most people are happy. But there is a specific recurring criticism, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.
Community Players report reaching the end of available quest content quickly. In the Steam discussion thread linked at the foot of this page, one player wrote “I ran out of quests to do, yet the door to the 3rd floor is still locked”; another described hitting “a narrative dead-end”.
You will find specific numbers attached to this elsewhere — a set unlock count, a precise hours-to-finish figure. We had one in an earlier version of this page, taken second-hand. We removed it, because we could not trace it to a review anyone can open and read. The complaint is real and well-evidenced; the tidy figures around it are not.
One claim in that thread is simply wrong and worth correcting: a player asserted the game “officially is in Early Access” and called the full-release labelling false advertising. Steam’s own store data carries no Early Access flag for GRAIN ROT. You can disagree with how much content a 1.0 should have — that is a fair argument — but the release is not mislabelled.
What the roadmap does to that calculation
The locked third-floor door is not an oversight. The developers’ 12 August post states the October Halloween Update “will open the third floor of the Outpost and introduce a new questline”, with the Deep Layers Update in September adding a biome and new enemies before that.
So the content ceiling players are hitting is real, dated, and scheduled to move. If you want the fuller picture of what lands when, see the roadmap.
That reframes the purchase rather than resolving it:
- Buy now if the four-player extraction loop is the appeal, you have people to play with, and you are comfortable that more arrives over the autumn.
- Wait if you want a long solo campaign, or you would rather judge the game once the third floor is actually open in October.
At under ten dollars for a couple of evenings with friends, most people answering that question have landed on the first option — which is roughly what a Very Positive rating across more than a thousand reviews describes.
Platform, before you buy
Windows and Steam only. No macOS build, no Linux build, no console version. If you were hoping to play it handheld, the Steam Deck situation is more nuanced than most pages make out.
