What happened, in order
- 12 June 2026 — the public demo launched, at 10 AM PST, replacing a closed playtest. All existing playtest keys were deactivated an hour before.
- Through Steam Next Fest — the demo stayed up for the duration of the festival.
- 1 August 2026 — a separate promotion gave Discord members the full game free for 24 hours, six days before launch.
- 7 August 2026 — 1.0 released. The demo came down.
What the demo did
The numbers are the publisher’s own, and they explain why this game had an audience waiting on day one.
“more than 350,000 downloads, generated over 250,000 wishlists, and became one of the Top 15 most-played demos during Steam Next Fest, with players spending an average of 1 hour and 28 minutes with the demo”
An hour and a half is a long average for a demo. For a two-person studio, this is the part of the story that mattered.
Recorded during the demo — some details may be out of date in 1.0
The announcement trailer above is the publisher’s own — Neem Interactive’s channel, confirmed rather than assumed. It is what people saw before the demo existed, which makes it the right artefact for a page about that period.
Why this page is useful even though the demo is gone
Here is the practical reason to care: a large share of the GRAIN ROT guidance online was written against the demo, between June and early August. It reads as current because nothing about it is dated.
The 1.0 release was not a polish pass. From the developers’ own feature list, these did not exist in the demo:
New Enemies · Boss Encounter · Elite Encounters · Legendary Gachas · New Elevator Modifiers · New Outpost NPCs · Complete 1.0 Quest Flow · 2 New Biomes · Spark Abilities · Player Leveling · Enchantment & Repair Machine · Second Floor of the Outpost · More Constructs · Difficulty Balancing · Gamepad Support
So a quick test for any GRAIN ROT guide you read, including ours: does it mention the second floor, Spark Abilities, or the public server browser that arrived on 12 August? If not, it is describing an older game.
Community This is also why several pages on this site label player accounts as demo-era. The clearest community write-ups of the Spark timer, the dropkick and enemy behaviour all come from June and July discussions — genuinely useful, and genuinely predating a difficulty rebalance. We would rather flag that than quietly present month-old notes as current. See the Spark page for an example of how that is handled.
The free routes are closed
Both have ended, and no reopening has been announced:
- The demo was tied to Steam Next Fest and has been removed.
- The 24-hour Discord free access ran on 1 August and ended.
What it costs and what that gets you — the current figure lives on that page rather than here, so a discount ending does not leave this sentence wrong. It also carries the content-length argument worth reading before you buy.
If you are starting fresh now
You are starting on a better version than the one those 350,000 people played, and one that is still moving — the roadmap runs through October. The place to begin is the beginner guide.
