If you are mid-run scanning boxes for a key, stop. You are looking for an item that nobody has evidenced exists.
The unlock is a quest, not an object
Community The answer players give each other in the Steam discussions is unglamorous: “By doing the quests, doesn’t take long.” No key drop, no hidden room, no Deep Layers fetch step before the quest line asks for one.
If your objectives have run out and the floor is still shut, the thing to check is room levels. One player’s summary: “Certain Progressions are locked behind room lvls to get better items.” Spend a haul on upgrades and see whether a new objective appears.
The full troubleshooting flow, including the case where a friend joins and the floor seems to vanish, is on the floor 2 page.
What is officially up there
Second Floor of the Outpost is a listed 1.0 feature, shipped alongside New Outpost NPCs, the Enchantment & Repair Machine, More Constructs and Player Leveling.
So the floor is not a token unlock — it comes with systems attached. What the developers have not published is which NPCs live up there or what each machine does, and we are not going to fill that in from guesswork.
It arrives covered in Grain Rot
The part people are least prepared for. Opening the floor does not give you a usable floor.
“Fixed a bug where Grain Rot was visible through certain unrepaired ceiling modules.”
The growth is tracked per module, so it is a physical thing in the space rather than a status effect. Community Players clear it with fire — a flamethrower-style bot found in the Deep Layers, lanterns, or a shop-unlocked flamethrower — and fire damages your vessel too. Full method and the lantern warning.
Worth being clear about, since the terminology confuses people: this growth is not the same thing as the deep-layer effects some sites call Rot Sickness, which is not a confirmed mechanic at all.
The third floor is a different story
Community Players asking where to find the third-floor key were answered plainly: “its not in the game yet got the anwser from the dev on discord.”
“The Halloween Update will open the third floor of the Outpost and introduce a new questline.” — planned for October 2026.
So if you have cleared everything and are standing at a locked third-floor door, you have reached the current end of the game rather than missed a key. The roadmap covers what lands before then.
Why “second floor key” is a phrase and not an item
Search volume created this page, and it is worth saying why. Players describe the goal — getting the second floor open — in the language of the games that came before, where a locked door implies a key. Sites built to catch search phrases then write about the key as though it were an object with a location.
The unlock is real. The key is a figure of speech.
